The Dolomites are among those places every photographer dreams of visiting — and for good reason. The region is home to countless breathtaking mountain peaks that can be enjoyed without having to spend hours hiking uphill. Most locations are easily accessible by car, which means even less experienced hikers can capture the beauty of these majestic mountains.
Every season in the Dolomites has its own charm, but the most popular times to visit are summer and autumn. Summer is perfect for photographing wildflowers, while autumn brings vibrant forests, especially thanks to the golden larch trees that transform the mountains into rich shades of yellow. Add some fog or rays of sunlight to the scene, and it becomes a paradise for landscape photographers. Whether we visit the Dolomites in summer or autumn, we always come home with plenty of unforgettable photographs.
During our Dolomites photo tour, we usually begin with locations that are easy to access. One of the top spots we often visit at the start of the workshop is Passo Gardena. It is a place that never gets boring because it is incredibly photogenic, and each season gives it a completely different atmosphere. It is only about 15 minutes from our hotel, so waking up early for sunrise is not too difficult.
Autumn has a special advantage here, as morning fog often forms in the valley. Once the sunlight hits it, the fog begins to flow dramatically over the hills, and you can hear excited photographers all around — these are exactly the conditions every landscape photographer hopes for. When the fog finally lifts, we can start playing with the sun rays reflecting off the golden larch trees, creating beautifully colorful images.
Passo Gardena can be photographed from several angles, so you never have to worry about squeezing into one crowded spot with other photographers. One of the best viewpoints is from a small hill just above the parking area, while another great composition can be found in the meadow beside the parking lot, often filled with flowers and colorful trees that work perfectly as foreground elements.
Another location we love visiting for sunrise is Alpe di Siusi. It is not exactly a “shoot-from-the-car” spot, but the short walk is absolutely worth it. The area is famous mainly for its small wooden cabins sitting in open meadows with dramatic mountain peaks rising in the background. It is a classic composition that never disappoints, even if the sky is completely clear without any colorful clouds, because the sun rises directly behind the mountains, creating beautiful sun stars that always add something special to the image.
In autumn, the meadows are often covered in frost during the morning — just like they were last year — and once the sun rises, the grass begins to sparkle and gently evaporate, creating a magical atmosphere. For photographers who enjoy minimalist compositions, the wooden cabins combined with trees in the foreground can create beautiful postcard-like photographs.
Last year, after every morning shoot, we made a stop for a traditional Italian espresso and a croissant filled with pistachio chocolate — a delicious and proven way to start the day. And somehow, we still managed to head back for hotel breakfast afterwards. After breakfast, we usually took some time to relax. This part of the day is also perfect for asking photography-related questions, which our instructors are always happy to answer.
In the afternoon, we head out to another location. Not every spot works equally well for both sunrise and sunset photography, which is why choosing the right place for the right time of day is extremely important. For sunrise, you usually want either a sun star appearing between the mountain peaks or a mountain beautifully illuminated by soft pink morning light. For sunset, you need an open western horizon so the sun does not disappear behind the mountains too early, giving you the best chance for dramatic colors in the clouds.
Whether it is sunrise or sunset, the Dolomites offer no shortage of incredible viewpoints for both parts of the day. And of course, you never have to worry about being in the right place at the wrong time. Our instructors have visited these locations dozens of times, so they know exactly where to be and when in order to get the best possible conditions and help you fully enjoy the photography experience.
Tre Cime is one of the most beautiful locations for sunset photography. It is also one of the most iconic views in the Dolomites. There are several trails leading there, so the hike can easily be adjusted depending on your fitness level. It can be either a relaxing walk or a more challenging adventure. Around Tre Cime, there are countless foreground elements that help bring life into a composition, including lakes, trees, rocks, and more. If you are unsure how to use these elements effectively, our instructors are always ready to guide you. And if the sky happens to stay completely clear without dramatic sunset light or colorful clouds, the conditions can still be perfect for astrophotography once the stars appear.
Of course, not every evening comes with a clear sky, so after photographing sunset, another favorite activity follows — dinner. Every evening, we find a great local restaurant or pizzeria and reward ourselves after a busy day with delicious Italian food. We honestly could not imagine a better way to end the day.
Depending on how much energy we still have left, the evening often continues with theory sessions accompanied by presentations. During these lessons, you will learn valuable know-how from photographers who are internationally recognized for their work. The workshops cover everything from the absolute basics of photography to advanced techniques used by professional photographers, including how to work with light, foregrounds, composition, and other artistic elements in landscape photography.
Around the fourth day of the workshop, we also begin post-processing lessons. Why only towards the end? Because the instructors do not want to show you edits on old images from previous years — they want to work directly with the photographs you captured during the workshop itself. This helps you better understand what is possible in post-processing and allows you to get even more enjoyment out of your own images.
If you are a beginner, it can sometimes be difficult to remember every post-processing technique shown during the lessons just from notes or memory. That is why we decided to record the entire post-processing workflow, so every participant can revisit the lessons after the workshop and edit their images step by step alongside the videos.
And of course, if you are already an advanced photographer with years of post-processing experience, you are more than welcome to speak with the instructors individually and discuss anything beyond the lessons — whether it is advanced techniques or advice on how to improve specific aspects of your work.
Sometimes it can be difficult to immediately apply theory in practice — deciding which lens to use for a particular scene, how far to stand from foreground elements to create natural depth, and many other details. That is why we always try to arrive at locations early enough so our instructors have time to walk around, help everyone individually, and make sure every participant has their camera settings and compositions prepared for the best possible results.
A Dolomites photo tour is also perfect for people who are just starting out with photography, because the scenes are easy to photograph, there is plenty of time for questions, and the experience is not physically demanding. If you would like to improve your photography skills, spend time with other photographers, or simply get to know the Dolomites better, we would love to see you at one of our photography workshops in Italy this year. You will not only visit the classic locations mentioned above, but thanks to our instructors — who know Italy inside out — you will also discover hidden places far from the crowds, locations that are not widely known and therefore have an even more unique atmosphere. We truly believe you will love the experience!
